About The Class

What the heck is coopering??  This is a question I get asked whenever I utter the term, and it's one of those times where work jargon has become so ingrained that you forget that people don't speak your language.  I hope to change that a little bit with this class!

Coopering is the ancient art of barrel and cask making.  No, we will not be actually making barrels in this class (I wish), but I will be covering ---

  • The history of coopering and why it was one of the most respected occupations in olden times (and still is!)
  • How oak trees are grown, selected, and prepared for coopering
  • How a cooper does what they do to bend and shape a solid straight piece of hardwood into a barrel
  • How that barrel then becomes such an important part of winemaking
  • You will get to enjoy some really great wines while learning!
  • I am currently working on arranging a tour of a cooperage, followed by a winery visit.  Participants of this class and the previous class (All About Oak pt. 1) will be contacted at a later date to opt in if you can/want to join.  Due to the business hours of cooperages, it will be on a weekday, date TBD.  The cost will just be the tasting fee of the winery we visit.

There will be two class times, so please choose one during checkout.  Each class will fill up at 15 people.

*Ticket fee includes a personal charcuterie plate.  Please specify in the notes during checkout if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions

EARLY-BIRD SPECIAL!  For a limited time, all ticket purchases made by February 26th will automatically be discounted by 10%!  No need to enter any codes in, discount will be applied at checkout

Class Location

Although not affiliated with the class, Rodrigue Molyneaux Winery has been kind enough to offer their clubhouse as a venue.

The winery is located in South Livermore, and has been in town since 1998, when the first vines were planted in their estate vineyard.  They now proudly grow Italian varietals Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Teraldego, and Fiano, as well as the Bordeaux varietals Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.  They are one of the few wineries in Livermore Valley that make this many Italian varietal wines.  All of the grapes for their wines come from the Livermore Valley AVA, and they make white, red, and dessert wines, including some red blends.

Come back and visit during tasting hours and enjoy their meticulously-landscaped gardens!
